Benefits, Drawbacks and Challenges of the Infrastructure Cluster
Benefits, Drawbacks and Challenges of the Infrastructure Cluster

Challenges

The Construction Industry has evolved beyond brick and mortar to include state of the art Communications and Cybersecurity protections. Each and every building now has redundant communications cables for Internet, Wifi, Satellite Communications, Physical and Virtual Security to protect assets, people and data, Back-up Energy Systems, etc, etc. Carbon Footprints reduction, Building Lead Certifications, Clean Air, Clean Water and Clean Rooms are in…everything else is out.

That is why now we need to talk about Infrastructure as it encompasses everything, not only construction.

Benefits

Thru the PRVI Infrastructure Clusters we plan to unite among different Economic Sectors and help the member move towards an Economy of Sensors lead by Communications, IT, Data Protection and Cybersecurity.

A Data Economy which is key for Artificial Intelligence to grow and prosper. Data Storage needs plenty of Cheap Energy to survive. Access to and from Space is more important than ever not only for Communications but also for all industries.

Drawbacks

Both Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands economies have been unable to leverage skills and interconnect Industries hindering their ability to Co-Create, by bringing together different skill sets and experiences.

Membership type benefits also seem to exclude participants (specially new comers into the Industries) and companies tend to act in an exclusive fashion. Said barriers to entry tend to spoil innovation, and limit educational opportunities. Unfavorable demographics for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands – with over 20% of the Population being 60 years or older – requires that we import talent from the United States and abroad, to keep up the necessary construction and reconstruction needed after Hurricanes Irma and Maria while helping new and existing Industries work on the Innovation/R & D demanded by today’s economy to keep up with leading local and international global companies.
